When Jumpcut Inc. first approached TCA to design new corporate headquarters and production studios in New York City, one of the priorities was particularly challenging. Jumpcut wanted a modern headquarters and state-of-the-art production facilities --- and they wanted it to be in operation in less than six months.

From the initial assignment for architectural services, Jumpcut soon asked TCA to assume construction management responsibilities for the project as well. The decision by Jumpcut to consolidate services under TCA meant TCA was able to maintain stricter control over building costs in addition to timing. In November of 2000, the Jumpcut offices and production facilities opened for operation, on time and under budget at a cost per square foot of $50 for the offices.

As a multi-media production company, Jumpcut wanted corporate offices that projected cutting-edge creativity as well as their proven business success. TCA responded with a high-energy modular design that takes a refined approach to the use of low-cost, industrial materials.

The emphasis on flexibility and innovation is clearly evident in the TCA approach to all aspects of the Jumpcut design. Large, translucent 'boxes' dominate the reception area as visitors arrive. Moving along the two major corridors, the 'boxes' are revealed to be the exterior of a modular office environment. Translucent polygal panels create a skin for the central office block that glows with a soft, metallic luster when lit from within.

TCA adapted construction systems generally reserved for sound stages in creating the Jumpcut offices. All dry wall construction was avoided. Instead, the adaptive plastic wall panel wall system was developed to fit with traditional pipe and rail methods used in theatrical staging. Walls perform multiple functions with little, if any, adjustment. A wall unit can easily be transformed into a moveable partition, a projection space --- even a window. Because of the low-cost and flexible nature of the materials selected, the client can turn a static space into an environment that responds to changing needs almost immediately.

TCA also developed component systems for staff workspace located along the perimeter of the office layout. Wood and aluminum workstations from TCA's Carica furniture system are installed. Detachable office dividers made of polygal provide for either a fixed installation or flexible assembly and reconfiguration as needed. The Carica workstations are adapted to create a plug-and-play common space. A thorough integration of the digital architecture with that of the new, adaptable workstations met Jumpcut's goal to provide each position a patchable digital imaging system.
