The DeRose residence is a loft in a renovated warehouse building in New York's TriBeCa neighborhood. This particular unit is all new construction. It is located on a new floor that was built on top of the existing structure. The client wanted to transform the space into a warm, welcoming environment. Having the opportunity to revise certain conditions during the construction phase enabled TCA to personalize the space even further.
Central to the TCA redesign is the incorporation of a new curved wall of walnut wood, which spans the length of the living room. The wall adds a certain sensual gracefulness that gives focus to the large open living area. This wall serves as a backdrop for a fireplace and wood storage unit that seems to pop out of its undulating curve. Cradled within the curve, the plasma screen tv has the appearance of floating in front of the wall.
In juxtaposition to the organic sweep of the curved wall is a large custom built-in unit. Comprised of bookcases, storage and bar unit, this piece, also in walnut, stands on the opposite side of the room. The regulated divisions and orderly geometry of this wall unit create a play of equal contrast and complement between the two focal pieces. The bar in the wall unit provides visual impact. It's form, which reads as an orange lacquer box protruding from the bookcase, glows when opened - the rear surface is backlit milkglass. Function being equal to form, wine bottles rest in a cleverly crafted location under the bar for convenient storage.
The overall spatial configuration of the open living / dining room area is kept simple and contemporary. TCA designed or hand picked each piece of the custom furniture. The sofa and chairs are upholstered in very warm, earthy tones that complement the dark woods used for the coffee table, window benches and curved wall. There are two pod like playful chairs in the living room that keep the feeling casual and fun since children are an important part of family life.
A master bedroom suite has sweeping views of the neighborhood that are compounded by the practical use of multiple mirrors in the room. The custom built dresser, desk and bench seating provide elegant yet utilitarian storage solutions for such a long narrow room.
Opening off the master bedroom, a door to the terrace provides a landscaped oasis in the midst of this popular Manhattan neighborhood. The focus of this outdoor space is a custom designed light fixture, a warm glowing rectangular form standing ten feet tall. This striking element is complimented by four similar pieces of smaller scale, evenly positioned within the organic flow of the landscaped areas of grasses, trees and other foliage.
Overall TCA selected natural fabrics, woods and warm, glowing colors that reinforce the tone of the design's modern simplicity. This theme carries itself from inside to outside, with a balanced blend of earthly elements and contemporary design. The result, the creation of a style which the client has coined "rustic modern".
