Hagop Kevorkian Center Library at New York University, New York, NY
Project Description
Client: Hagop Kevorkian Center Library
The Richard Etenhausen library of Middle Eastern studies was housed in the first floor of the Kevorkian Building for Middle Eastern Studies at NYU. While the building was modern and beautiful, it wasn’t serving the needs of the library, in part because there was no entry sequence in the space. TCA’s solution highlights the usefulness of an all glass vestibule and single tall glass wall, providing acoustic privacy while still allowing the library to borrow light from the exterior. It allowed the library to institute climate controls, provided acoustical separation for people using the library and allowed for some security function. At the same time, the space stayed visually open and light, so there was no sense of enclosure. We also designed two mezzanines of shelves and furniture for improved access to the collections, shelving, a new reception desk and lighting.
