Washington Street Lofts, Houston, TX

Project Description

Client: Washington Street Lofts

When a real estate developer decided to build condominium units in an up-and-coming neighborhood in Houston, he thought offering New York-style lofts would give him a competitive advantage. He asked Wayne Turett for a design that would feel authentically urban.

Turett's design called for large apartments with 20' ceilings in a clever and flexible construction format: within a cube module/concrete grid, the building would be filled out. In other words, the floors, beams and columns would be concrete, and exterior surfaces would be either glass, wood paneling or a combination of surfaces. The cubes that remain open become terraces.

In this instance, TCA did the zoning work and planning as well. The master plan called for three buildings of nine stories, with approximately 27 units in each.
