A SoHo penthouse reimagined into a bespoke home - anchored by a new sculptural steel staircase leading to a transformed roof terrace, surrounded by views of the city all around.

 

A former client returned to TTC asking us to reimagine a newly-purchased bland developer apartment into a warm and exciting home as well as a place for hosting and entertaining. The original space came with a simple stair and utilitarian bulkhead at the center of the apartment to provide access to an undeveloped roof terrace. Collaborating with an innovative team of designers, engineers and craftspeople we revamped the interior with new finishes, lighting and built-in cabinetry throughout the apartment.

 

The central focus was the design of a sculptural steel staircase as the centerpiece of this new home. The stair had to be carefully engineered to both support its unique cantilevered form and to accommodate the existing building’s structure and loads. At the top, new windows were inserted into the bulkhead walls, allowing sunlight to spill down to the apartment below and drawing residents and visitors alike to a completely reimagined roof terrace with wrap-around views of SoHo and Lower Manhattan. New landscaping, decking and cladding, lighting and furnishings created a series of spaces on the roof - a new rooftop kitchen and outdoor dining space, along with a seating and entertainment area, and a yoga and exercise deck with an outdoor shower.

 

The end result was a complete transformation of this penthouse into a bespoke residence that the owner has enjoyed for years.
