LAFAYETTE STREET PENTHOUSE

Located in New York City’s SoHo neighborhood, this penthouse apartment renovation transforms a developer-built residence into a more personal and livable home, centered around a reimagined connection to the roof. The Turett Collaborative (TTC) worked with a returning client to reshape the apartment and unlock the potential of an underused roof terrace, creating a more cohesive environment for both daily living and entertaining.

At the center of the apartment, an existing stair and bulkhead provided access to the roof but felt disconnected from the rest of the space. TTC replaced this with a new sculptural steel stair that brings a stronger sense of continuity between levels while drawing light down into the interior. The stair becomes a natural focal point within the home, connecting the main living areas to the level above in a more open and inviting way.

The roof terrace was redesigned as an extension of the apartment, organized into a series of spaces for different uses. Areas for dining, seating, and more private activities are integrated with planting, decking, and built-in elements, allowing the roof to function as an outdoor living space with views across SoHo and Lower Manhattan. Openings at the bulkhead bring daylight into the stair and apartment below, reinforcing the relationship between interior and exterior.

Throughout the apartment, interior design was developed to support a warmer and more cohesive atmosphere, with updated finishes, lighting, and custom millwork bringing continuity across the space. The result is a SoHo penthouse residence that feels more connected, flexible, and attuned to the ways the owner lives, both inside the apartment and on the roof above.
