TELEMEDIA ACCELERATOR

In 1999, The Turett Collaborative was commissioned to design a shared workplace for the TeleMedia Accelerator, an initiative established to support emerging companies in broadband content and e-commerce. The organization provided seed funding, office space, infrastructure, and professional services to help early-stage businesses develop and grow.

A collaboration between the New York City Investment Fund, founded by Henry Kravis, and the City University of New York, the accelerator combined private investment with a civic mission to encourage entrepreneurship and economic development.

Designed to accommodate more than ten independent organizations, the workplace needed to support the distinct identities and operational requirements of its occupants while encouraging communication and collaboration. TTC responded with a bold, unconventional interior that reflected the optimism and experimentation of the emerging digital economy.

Saturated colors, curved walls, circular openings, and streamlined furnishings established a playful architectural language throughout the space. Conference rooms, informal lounges, and shared gathering areas provided a variety of settings for interaction, while the use of color and distinctive architectural forms gave the workplace a cohesive visual identity.

The project captures a particular moment in the evolution of workplace design, when emerging technologies and new models of entrepreneurship inspired equally ambitious ideas about the environments in which people work.
