UPPER WEST SIDE APARTMENT
This interiors project by The Turett Collaborative (TTC), led by Jessica Shaw, reimagines a five-bedroom, 3,277-square-foot apartment on the Upper West Side within a New Classical-style building. The design approach began with a single abstract painting, Computer Whiz (Robert Overby, 1987), which the clients shared as a point of reference. Its energy informed a home that balances neutral backdrops with bold color, rich texture, and a strong sense of personality.
Throughout the apartment, color is introduced through furniture, textiles, and accessories while the walls remain largely neutral. The entry sequence was widened to create a stronger arrival while cleverly concealing an AV closet. In the living room, rainbow-hued curtains draw the eye to the floor-to-ceiling windows, setting a lively tone supported by a mix of seating pieces. Nearby, a media room incorporates a saturated blue corner as a backdrop for art and is designed to convert into a guest bedroom. In the kitchen, TTC introduced a breakfast table with custom window seating, and barstools that stand out against white cabinetry.
The primary bedroom shifts the palette again, layering shades of purple with bright whites and deep greys for a mood that is both cozy and dramatic. The children’s bedrooms continue the apartment’s graphic use of color, incorporating geometric shapes in two different ways, one expressed on the floor and the other across the ceiling. The result is an expressive, art-forward home shaped by close collaboration and the clients’ bold sensibilities.
