WEST 25TH STREET TOWNHOUSE

A strikingly vertical townhouse in Chelsea whose materiality and planning clarity were inspired by the numerous contemporary art galleries that populate the neighborhood.

TTC worked closely with a developer to create this modern townhouse located near Chelsea's gallery district. The existing multifamily residential building was effectively demolished providing a clean slate to create a new building on a quite tree lined block. The front, clad in dark iron spot roman brick, recalls the rhythm of the townhouses on the tree lined block, whereas the rear façade has a more monolithic appearance that features a double height wall of glazing connecting the kitchen, informal dining room, and living room spaces onto a lush, landscaped rear yard. The two-story glazing projects forward into the yard creating a 3rd floor terrace off of the master bedroom level. Additional bedrooms and studies at the 4th and 5th floor culminate in a Penthouse recreational room with access to a landscaped roof top terrace.

The public floors on the first and second levels were allowed to remain as open as possible with clear views from the front of the building to the rear, a nod to the art galleries that predominate throughout the neighborhood. The interior palette was kept relatively simple. Siberian oak floors and painted white walls feature throughout, act as a canvas to be embellished by the future owner's.
