WEST VILLAGE DUPLEX

Located in the West Village, just steps from the Hudson River, the owners of this unique duplex apartment originally approached The Turett Collaborative (TTC) to rework the entry sequence, which culminated in a large central double-height stair hall. An existing wood and glassstraight-run stair bisected the space, but wasn’t especially visually appealing and created a cramped, inefficient entry hall at the foot of the stair and, conversely, an overly-large, underutilized landing at the floor above. Furthermore, the spaces around the stair hall on both levels were undefined and underutilized. Knowing TTC’s reputation for innovative and bespoke stair designs for their residential projects, the owners tasked the design team with developing a unique statement for this grand space overlooking Lower Manhattan, and to improve the layouts around it.

Studying many different stair configurations through sketches, digital renderings, and hand-built and 3D-printed models, the team settled on an organic curved stair profile that sweeps through the double-height space. The departure and landing points of the stair allowed for the reconfiguration of the adjacent spaces on the lower and upper floors, creating room for a proper entrance hall (with added storage) and enlarging one of the children’s bedrooms upstairs. The curved stair is encased in a plaster shell - a tight spiral at the inner curve and a large convex shell at the exterior, “squeezed” by the adjacent walls and bulging towards the Dining Rm and the windows beyond. The organic softness of this stair provided a welcome contrast to the hard edges and angles of the rest of the apartment.

Over the course of the design process the scope of work increased from a targeted intervention at the stair, to a series of additional projects around the home, and ultimately to a full revamp of the apartment. TTC studied the original construction drawings and conditions on-site to identify opportunities for gaining additional space and rethinking the circulation and organization of the western half of the apartment on both floors. Partnering with interior designer Purvi Padia Revelry, all of the bathrooms were stripped down to the studs and completely re-finished, along with new furnishings, accessories, and artwork throughout the apartments. New casing, baseboards, and doors were designed by TTC for the apartment, together with a new lime-wash paint finish by Revelry throughout, and revamp of the existing white oak floors to transform the character of the space. In addition, TTC updated the layout of the existing Kitchen and worked with Revelry on the design of new, custom, hand-painted Kitchen cabinets, as well as new Den and Study millwork.

Starting from a targeted renovation of the central part of the home and a unique TTC-designed staircase, this project grew into a special collaboration between, Turett, Revelry, and the homeowners into a one-of-a-kind renovation of this duplex apartment to tailor every part to the needs and aesthetics of its owners. Along the way, smart interventions maximized the use of the space and blended the high-end finishes and details with a better organization for the entire home. The result is a statement-making entry to and circulation through the apartment, with a design which continues to reveal itself at each turn - all of it tied together with expertly-selected finishes, lighting, and furnishings.
